Become a first responder in New York City
Becoming a first responder in New York City requires a combination of education, training, and certification. The first step is to obtain a high school diploma or GED. After that, aspiring first responders can enroll in a training program at a community college or vocational school. These programs typically last between six months and two years and cover topics such as emergency medical services, firefighting, and law enforcement.
Once the training program is complete, individuals must obtain certification from the appropriate agency. For example, those interested in becoming emergency medical technicians (EMTs) must pass the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) exam and obtain certification from the New York State Department of Health. Similarly, those interested in becoming firefighters must pass the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) exam and complete the FDNY Academy.
In addition to education and certification, first responders in New York City must also meet certain physical and mental requirements. For example, firefighters must pass a physical fitness test and EMTs must be able to lift and carry heavy equipment. All first responders must also pass a background check and drug test.
