Become a certified teacher in San Francisco
To become a certified teacher in San Francisco, you must first earn a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution. The degree should be in the subject area you wish to teach, such as English, math, or science. After earning your degree, you must complete a teacher preparation program that is approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC). These programs can be completed at universities, community colleges, or alternative certification programs.
Once you have completed your teacher preparation program, you must pass the California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST) and the appropriate subject matter exam(s) for the subject you wish to teach. You must also complete a background check and meet other requirements set by the CTC. After meeting all of these requirements, you can apply for a teaching credential through the CTC.
In addition to the above requirements, San Francisco also requires that all teachers complete a course on the history and culture of San Francisco. This course can be taken online or in-person and must be completed within the first two years of teaching in the district.
