Digital footprint
Digital footprints encompass both offline and online activities stored in electronic databases. They provide valuable social data that offers insights into individual and population-wide patterns and characteristics. By examining data from say Facebook profiles and mobile device logs, researchers have been able to infer personality traits, which are key psychological frameworks used to describe variations in individual behavior. Research and studies on this subject have been performed to the greatest extent by one of Gyfted’s cofounders - dr Michal Kosinski at Stanford University. You can find Michal’s research here and here.

What is a digital footprint?
A digital footprint refers to the trail of data and information that individuals create and leave behind as they interact with digital platforms, websites, and online services. It is essentially a record of their online activities and presence. Every action taken in the digital realm, such as posting on social media, browsing websites, sending emails, making online purchases, or using online services, contributes to the formation of a person's digital footprint.
The concept of a digital footprint highlights the fact that our actions and behaviors online can be documented, recorded, and potentially traced back to us. This data can have long-lasting implications as it can be archived, stored, shared, and potentially used by individuals, organizations, or even automated systems for various purposes. It can impact one's online reputation, influence targeted advertising, and shape the way others perceive and interact with them in the digital space.
A person’s digital footprint consists of?
1. Personal information: details like name, age, gender, email address, phone number, and other identifying information that individuals provide when creating accounts on websites, social media platforms, or online services.
2. Social media presence: social media profiles and activities. This includes posts, comments, likes, shares, and other interactions on platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, etc..
3. Online searches: the search queries a person enters into search engines like Google, Bing, or Yahoo leave a trace of their interests, curiosities, and information-seeking behavior.
4. Website visits: a record of your browsing history. This data can be collected by internet service providers, web browsers, or other tracking mechanisms.
5. Online purchases: e-commerce purchasing of products or services - these generate digital footprints through transaction records, order history, and customer profiles.
6. Communication records: emails, instant messaging conversations, voice or video calls, and other forms of digital communication leave traces of personal exchanges and interactions.
7. Online content creation: any content individuals create and share online, such as blog posts, articles, videos, podcasts, artwork, or music, contributes to their digital footprint.
8. Location data: The use of location-based services, GPS, or mobile applications can track and store information about a person's physical whereabouts, adding to their digital footprint.
9. Online reviews: reviews, ratings, or comments on products, services, restaurants, or other platforms contributes to a person's digital footprint.
10. Online accounts and subscriptions: Each online account, subscription, or membership that an individual creates or engages with leaves a record of their interests and preferences.
11. Credit card purchase data: the holy grail probably of all digital footprints ;)
